Lucian Freud (1922–2011) —one of the most outstanding British painters of the 20th century, grandson of Sigmund Freud. He was born in Berlin and emigrated to Great Britain with his family in 1933. He studied, among other places, at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London. Initially associated with Surrealism, he quickly developed his own painterly language—a brutally honest portraiture. His work focused on studies of the body, the psychology of the model, and physical materiality. He painted mainly nudes and portraits, using a thick, pasty texture of oil paint. Freud was a professor at the Slade School of Fine Art, and his works are held in the world’s most important museum collections, including Tate Britain, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Centre Pompidou.
