He was initially apprenticed to his father, Pascha Weitsch, then studied with Johann Heinrich Tischbein in Kassel, with Lambert Krahe at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf. Among other things, he was court painter to the Duke of Brunswick. In 1894 he became a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts, and from 1798 its rector and court painter to the King of Prussia.
Queen Louisa of Prussia (1776 Hanover - 1810 Hohenzieritz) was the daughter of Karl II Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and Frederica of Hesse. In 1793 she married the heir to the throne of Prussia, and from 1797 King Frederick William III. Revered for her patriotic (anti-Napoleonic) and charitable activities, she was called the king's "best minister." After her death, she became an object of veneration among her subjects, and a patron of the order.
