PROBABLY STUDIO OF HANS MAKART (SALZBURG 1840 - 1884 VIENNA) . A Monumental Neo-Renaissance Courting Scene in an Architectural Capriccio

Oil on Canvas

This grand-scale, monumental canvas is a magnificent example of the Ringstraße style that defined the high-society interiors of late 19th-century Vienna. Measuring an impressive 3.3 meters in length, the work was originally designed as an architectural insert—likely a dessus-de-porte (overdoor) or part of a ballroom’s decorative frieze. The composition depicts a pair of figures in lavish 16th-century attire, sharing a glass of wine in a romantic, theatrical garden setting.
Attributed to the immediate circle or workshop of Hans Makart, the work reflects the "Makartstil" that dominated Austrian and German aesthetics. The influence of the master is evident in the sensuous, rich palette of emerald greens, deep ochres, and crimson, as well as the idealized, stage-like arrangement of the figures. The setting is a classic "Capriccio," blending lush Mediterranean vegetation with fallen Corinthian columns and ruined balustrades, symbolizing a romanticized past.
The sheer scale of this piece transforms the intimate portrait into a bold architectural statement, typical of the historicist fascination with monumental decorative arts. It represents the peak of Austrian grandeur, designed to imbue a prestigious interior with imperial splendor. Oil on canvas, 120 x 330 cm. Circa 1870–1880.
