A beautiful piece of one of the Free City’s rarest banknotes.
It is a reprint of the 50,000-mark banknote from March 1923, with a face value of 1 million marks. This was the city’s response to the galloping inflation of the German mark, which led to a currency changeover to the gulden just two months later. The banknote was in circulation from August 24, 1923, to September 19, 1923 (withdrawn by a Senate decision following the introduction of the proper 1 million mark banknote).
Variant with red overprint.
Compared to the banknotes from March 1923, the color scheme of the Senate seal and the serial number also changed (from red to green).
