General of the People's Army of Poland Karol Swierczewski.
Karol Swierczewski, known by his nickname "Walter," was a general who served in both the Red Army and the People's Polish Army. As an influential communist activist and deputy minister of national defense, he played a key role in building the structures of People's Poland after World War II. His death in 1947 in an ambush prepared by UPA units near Jablonki became an immediate pretext for the authorities of the time to carry out mass deportations under Operation Vistula. Although he was created an impeccable national hero during the decades of the People's Republic of Poland, historians point to his heavy reliance on the USSR and numerous command errors that cost the lives of many soldiers. Today, he remains a highly controversial figure, and his image, which once adorned Polish banknotes, has been almost completely removed from public space.
