56. WAILLY MONSIEUR DE, Les Commentaires de César. Nouvelle édition (...).
Paris 1775, Joseph Barbou, Vol. 1: XIX +497 p., Vol. 2: 599 p.
The collected works of Julius Caesar, the so-called Corpus Caesarianum, i.e. all the texts attributed to Caesar. It includes "De bello Gallico," i.e. "On the Gallic War," the famous text on the conquest of Gallia. This is followed by "De bello civilo," i.e. "On the Civil War," which Caesar fought after the breakup of the triumvirate. In addition, the old print contains three other treatises "De bello Alexandrino", i.e. "On the Alexandrian War", "De bello Africano", i.e. "On the African War", and "De bello Hispaniens", i.e. "On the Spanish War". Some historians consider Aulus Histius to be their author, while others believe that these were Caesar's works edited only by his associate. The text is paralleled in Latin and French with translation and commentaries by Noël-François De Wailly [?], (1724-1801), a language specialist and orthography expert, or his unknown relative. Subject of this sale are two volumes in a set containing all of Caesar's works.
