This is a comprehensive, Baroque compendium of knowledge at the intersection of the natural sciences, mathematics, and history. Zahn was a clergyman and scholar associated with the Jesuit tradition, and his work fits into the trend of encyclopedic works of the era, combining science with natural philosophy. The work includes, among other things: descriptions of physical phenomena (light, optics, mechanics), mathematical and astronomical topics, and discussions of scientific instruments (especially optical ones). From a collector’s perspective, this is a highly valued item. While not a groundbreaking work, it accurately reflects the state of knowledge and the mindset of scholars at the end of the 17th century. Signs of moisture and heavy browning, several loose and frayed pages, traces of owner’s marks, a small fragment cut out on the last page. Volume 1 and approx. 23 copperplate engravings are missing. The binding shows heavy scuffing and losses on the spine.
