Flemish School, Second Half of the 17th Century , The Presentation in the Temple (Simeon with the Christ Child)

This compelling oil painting from the second half of the 17th century captures a deeply spiritual moment, likely depicting the Presentation of Christ in the Temple. The central figure is an elderly, bearded man, traditionally identified as Saint Simeon, shown holding the Christ Child with profound reverence. His face, illuminated by a divine light, conveys a sense of awe and prophecy, while the infant Christ appears serene and knowing. The artist has employed a dramatic and tenebrous style, characteristic of the Flemish Baroque, using strong contrasts of light and shadow to heighten the emotional intensity of the scene. The rich drapery and the luminous figures emerge from a dark background, drawing the viewer's eye to the spiritual exchange between Simeon and the Child. Two cherubs, bathed in light, appear in the upper right, adding to the celestial and sacred nature of the event. Oil on canvas, 105 x 85 cm
