Giuseppe Bartolomeo Chiari Rome (1654 -1727) , Trinity and the Immaculate Conception

This painting presents a singular and rare iconographic composition of the Celestial Trinity with the Immaculate Conception set within an ecstatic heavenly atmosphere The figures are immersed among clouds and angels featuring traditional symbolism such as the moon beneath the Virgins feet and the serpent signifying the Immaculate Conception Above her Jesus kneels on a cloud holding a crown of stars ready to place it upon her head while the dove of the Holy Spirit flies nearby In the background God the Father emerges from the mists holding a scepter of power positioned before the great triangle of Alpha and Omega The work displays a solid classicist culture typical of early 18th century Rome directly following the grand tradition of Carlo Maratta who was the most influential painter in the city during that period The stylistic execution is marked by swollen drapery heavy with volume darkening clouds beneath the figures and a refined treatment of the faces of Mary and Jesus which align perfectly with Chiaris late maturity Technical comparisons with other known works such as the Flight into Egypt and the Holy Family confirm the attribution through the specific rendering of anatomical features and the fluid yet structured handling of the celestial light.
