Michał Stańko (1901–1969), landscape painter. A representative of the artistic community associated with the Tatra Mountains and Silesia. He was born in Sosnowiec and spent a significant part of his life in Zakopane, where he ran a studio and drew inspiration from the mountain landscape. He was a member of the Association of Polish Artists and Designers and Stanisław Szukalski’s Rogate Serce (Horned Heart) group. During World War I, he fought in the Legions, and during the September Campaign of 1939, he participated in the fighting as a volunteer. He created easel and monumental paintings and also worked in polychrome. He gained the greatest recognition for his atmospheric Tatra landscapes, which captured the beauty of the mountain landscape, local architecture, and the culture of the Podhale region.
His work is part of the tradition of 20th-century Polish landscape painting.
