Włodzimierz TETMAJER

He was the brother of the famous Young Poland poet Kazimierz Przerwy-Tetmajer. Already as a child, he showed great interest in art and, most importantly, possessed considerable artistic talent. He therefore decided to tie his life path to what he loved most. From 1875 to 1886 he studied at the School of Fine Arts in Cracow. He then lived temporarily in Vienna, where he also took painting lessons, and then studied in Munich and Paris. Between 1889 and 1895, he gained practical knowledge in workshops with the eminent master, Jan Matejko. Although he came from an intelligentsia family, he married a peasant's daughter. His chosen one was Anna Mikolajczykowna, who lived in Bronowice (near Krakow). After the wedding, the young couple lived there together in a poor house. Despite the change in lifestyle, Tetmajer did not abandon painting and his interests. On the contrary, he continued to paint. In 1897 he became a member of the Society of Polish Artists. He was also active in the Zero painting group and the Polish Applied Arts Society.

He created so-called genre scenes, showing rural life, beautiful landscapes, natural beauties and traditional rituals of peasants. Some of his most famous paintings include: "Musicians in Bronowice", "Spring in Bronowice" or "Dorobek. The Artist's Family." No less famous are his polychrome paintings, which today can be found in many churches. The most famous can be seen in the Chapel of the Holy Trinity in Wawel Castle and the Corpus Christi Collegiate Church in Biecz. Other of his works can be found in Sosnowiec and Kalisz, among other places.

Włodzimierz Tetmajer died on December 26, 1923 in Bronowice. He stayed in his beloved village until his death.
