Zdzislaw Stanek - Painter, sculptor (born 1925 in Cracow, died 1996 in Szczecinek), Studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow. After a forced interruption of his studies, he spent most of his life in Katowice, where he became a co-founder of the ST-53 Group. Starting from analytical cubism, based on his studies of Władysław Strzemiński's Theory of Seeing, he defined the issues he tried to solve for the rest of his work. Together with the Group, he exhibited in Katowice, Krakow, Poznan, Szczecin and Warsaw (including Krzywe Kolo).
In the second half of the 1950s, textural elements appeared in his work. In the 1960s, he began composing reliefs, which led to the creation in the 1970s of picture-forms - autonomous spatial forms with a status between painting and sculpture. In the 1980s, he presented his surreal works several times at exhibitions of the Independent Culture Movement.
Together with other artists, including Marian Bogusz and Jan Ziemski (Zamek Group), he was also involved in the artistic arrangement of the gable walls of blocks of flats in Lublin. For the last fourteen years of his life (1982-96), as a result of health problems, he did not create.
In the country, he presented his works in group exhibitions, including. II and III Exhibition of Modern Art in Warsaw (1957- 1959), the All-Polish Exhibition of Young Painting and Graphics in Sopot (1958), the "15th Anniversary of the People's Republic of Poland" exhibition (1961), the Festivals of Polish Contemporary Painting in Szczecin (1962-70, 1980-82), the 3rd National Exhibition of Contemporary Art in Bielsko-Biała (1963), the National Exhibition "Bielska Jesień" (1966), the Drawing Triennial in Wroclaw (1968, 1971), the Lublin Art Meetings (1976).
His individual exhibitions were held both at home, including in Warsaw (1959), Katowice (1962, 1969, 1972, 1976), Szczecin (1967), Bytom (1968), and abroad; in Paris, Berlin, Munich, Bonn and Ostrava. The artist's works can be found in the following collections: National Museums in Warsaw, Szczecin and Cracow, Museums in Chorzow, Katowice, Torun, Bytom, Bielsko-Biala, Tarnow, Stupsk and Koszalin, Gallery of Modern Art BWA, Museum of Modern Art in Stockholm and in private collections around the world.
Zdzislaw Stanek was a member of the Senate of the Academy of Rome and the recipient of numerous prestigious awards. He received, among others, the silver medal and the title Artifex Doctus IPKART for lifetime achievement (1978) and ll Trofeo Internazionale Medusa Aurea (1980).
