Compton traveled extensively throughout Europe, and the result of these journeys is a large body of landscapes depicting a wide variety of locations, from England to southern Italy. He exhibited frequently in Germany and the British Isles and was a member of the Münchner Künstlergenossenschaft und Teilnahme.
