Biography
He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków under the guidance of Jacek Malczewski and Wojciech Weiss. In 1922, he left for Paris. During his stay in France, he exhibited extensively, including at the Paris salons: the Autumn Salon and the Salon des Indépendants. In 1939, he returned to Poland; he became chair of the drawing department at the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts, and from 1945 onward served as rector of that institution. From 1950 to 1959, he was a professor of painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. After the war, he participated in many prestigious exhibitions around the world. He received the Guggenheim Museum Award in 1960. During his time in Paris, he painted landscapes, still lifes, and portraits in a style reminiscent of Chaim Soutine. In later years, he reaffirmed his affiliation with the Colorist movement.
