About the Artist:
Monica Fagan, of Anglo-Irish descent, was born in Sheffield (UK) and came to France at the age of 18 to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Rennes. She has shown her work in many exhibitions and art galleries in France and the rest of Europe on fantasy painting and Magic Realism. President of "Barbizon: Painters of Today" from 1987 to 1991, she has had a permanent exhibition of her works at the Museum of Imaginary Art in Château de Ferrières, Seine-et-Marne since 1994. In addition, she creates costumes and opera sets.
Monica Fagan's oil paintings are steeped in fantastic and phenomenal surrealism. The artist deeply resonates with the painters of the Pre-Raphaelites and Surrealist symbols of letters because of their rich imagination. She draws from the past the excellence of solid painting technique, which she reflects in her works, which are both contemporary and timeless. Women, their role in the world, in history, art and opera occupy a very important place in her work. A world of contrasts and contradictions, virginity and fertility, symbolism and sensuality. To enter this world, we must leave our masks above water and take the keys it offers - invitations to penetrate and seek what it jealously hides. But we are not alone. The painting is inhabited. Shapes and objects become human. Musical instruments, rocks, stones and trees become female figures. She describes the passage of matter through water and checkerboard, a symbol of light and darkness... duality and ambiguity... through shadow to eternal light. The passage of time is also one of her interests: she creates fantastic flora and fauna that claim their place in the Cycle of Life. Everything indicates that Man never holds the key to either power or the future. Man only passes, time is eternal... like the ivy that often invades her paintings, a symbol of the Cycle of Life.
