Biography
He studied painting in the studios of Professor Stanisław Teisseyre and Krystyna Łada-Studnicka, and printmaking under Professor Zygmunt Karolak. From 1955 to 1962, he was associated with the “Kadyny” ceramics group, led by Hanna Żuławska. From 1965 onward, he lived in a house on Gdańsk’s Fish Market, where a commemorative plaque dedicated to the artist—created by his longtime friend, the Gdańsk sculptor Bronisław Tusk—is now mounted on the wall. Ryszard Stryjec practiced painting, sculpture, and ceramics, but above all, printmaking. He created several thousand works. A characteristic feature of his art was the interweaving of fantastical, fairy-tale, and biblical figures into Gdańsk motifs. The artist’s works have been featured in numerous group and solo exhibitions in Poland and abroad, including in France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland, and are held in many private collections in the Tri-City region.
