Szymon Buchbinder (January 6, 1853, Radzyń Podlaski – 1908?, Berlin) – a Polish painter of Jewish descent. Son of a provincial painter and decorator, brother of Józef Buchbinder, who likely provided his younger brother with art instruction. From 1869 to 1871, he studied at the Drawing Class in Warsaw, and from 1873 to 1878 he studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, and from 1879 to 1882 at the School of Fine Arts (SSP) in Kraków in Jan Matejko’s studio. He was primarily the author of small historical and genre paintings in the Dutch style, as well as portraits; between 1874 and 1883, he participated in exhibitions organized by the TZSP in Warsaw and the TPSP in Kraków; his body of work is relatively small; see SAP, vol. 1, pp. 267–268.
Aureliusz Pruszyński (September 9, 1847, Kasinka Mała, Limanowa County – April 22, 1904, Kraków) - a Kraków-based lithographer and owner of the renowned Aureliusz Pruszyński Artistic Lithography Workshop in Kraków, founded in 1873 at 17 Pijarska Street; from around 1902, the workshop was owned by his son, Zenon Pruszyński (see SAP, vol. 8, pp. 92–93). From the late 19th century onward, leading Kraków artists had their graphic works (including posters) printed using the lithography technique at A. Pruszyński’s studio, among them the famous “Melpomene Portfolio.”
