Takashi Murakami (b. 1962, Tokyo)
Japanese artist, cultural theorist and producer, creator of the Superflat trend and founder of the Kaikai Kiki Co. studio/organization. He was educated at Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music (Tōkyō Geidai), where he received his doctorate in nihonga painting. His practice combines painting, sculpture, printmaking, film and design, operating simultaneously in the fields of gallery and mass distribution. Murakami's iconic motifs include smiling flowers, Mr. DOB figures, skulls and rainbow swirls. The author of numerous museum exhibitions (including MOCA Los Angeles, 2007; Château de Versailles, 2010; Mori Art Museum, Tokyo), he is known for his collaborations with the fashion and music industries (including Louis Vuitton, Kanye West). His works are in the collections of major institutions around the world. Murakami's style - combining "high" and "low" - redefined the relationship between contemporary art and pop culture, becoming one of the most influential visual languages of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
