Tuscany, Bolgheri
Comments
Sassicaia debuted in 1968 and showed the world the enormous potential of the terroir in Bolgheri, permanently putting the region on the fine wine map. The two best vintages created by Tenuta San Guido, 1985 and 2016, definitely rank among the best Italian wines ever created.
Sassicaia owes its elegance and style to the cool character of the producer's most important winnc: Castiglioncello, Quercione and Doccino, as well as the specific iron-rich soil, which gives the wine minerality and earthy notes. The lovely bouquet of this wine is complemented by notes of black currant, cassis liqueur and blackberries. It changes in the glass and lingers long on the palate.
Sassicaia 2013 is a beautifully made wine, wonderfully precise, with a very nice, consistent structure. The bouquet opens slowly, step by step showing what it has to offer. Dark fruits, herbs, spices, notes of barrel, smoke, dark chocolate. On the structure side, the standouts are the fresh acidity, which gives the wine its sparkle, and the ripe, clear tannin, which is responsible for the elegance. It is definitely worth waiting to open this wine, savoring in the meantime, for example, the 2012 vintage.
