Biography
In her work, Aleksandra Kujawska explores humanity’s atavistic longing for nature and community. She has participated in dozens of group and solo exhibitions, including in Paris, London, Milan, Luxembourg, Venice, Nowy Bór, Sofia, Dresden, Warsaw, Kraków, Wrocław, Łódź, Gdynia, and Jelenia Góra.
Her awards include: 1st place—the Furniture Diamond Award, and 1st place in the international “Glass Improvisation” competition. She is a winner of “Must Have 2020” at Łódź Design, a winner of “Must Have 2021” at the Łódź Design Festival, a finalist in the “Good Design 2021” competition organized by the Institute of Industrial Design in Warsaw, and received a special mention in the “Design Educated” competition in Germany. She has participated in exhibitions at the world’s most important design festivals, such as London Design Week, Expo Milano, Salone del Mobile Milano, Venetian Glass Week, the Sofia Glass Biennale, Gdynia Design Days, and the Łódź Design Festival. Her works are included in the collections of the Karkonosze Museum, the Museum of Ceramic Techniques in Koło, and the Polish Design Gallery at the National Museum in Warsaw. She has received scholarships and grants from, among others, the Ministry of Culture, Art, and National Heritage; the Adam Mickiewicz Institute in Warsaw; Urban Glass in New York; and the Pilchuck Glass School in the U.S.
She says of her work: “I am interested in the relationship between humans and nature. In my work, I focus on the atavistic needs of contemporary humans for contact with nature and community.
I explore the realms of human desires and emotions associated with the loss of these relationships and the longing for them.
I am interested in contemporary humans becoming aware that they are biological beings, that they are part of nature—with which they have lost contact and whose existence they have forgotten.
I am far from constructing instructions or depicting everyday life. I am interested in the process of self-awareness and the associated emotions, needs, longings, and fears.
I strive to depict these in my works.
