Stefan Kisielewski’s debut novel, written between 1942 and 1944, whose protagonist —a young intellectual—struggles with issues of his own sexuality, impotence, and a sense of maladjustment, and his personal experiences are set against the backdrop of Poland in the late 1930s and the outbreak of World War II. A piece autographed and dedicated by the author to Tadeusz Kwiatkowski (1920–2007), a novelist, satirist, screenwriter, and author of stage plays, who was closely associated with the literary and theatrical life of Kraków. Among other things, he was the screenwriter for the films *The Saragossa Manuscript* and *Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass*, and under the pseudonym Noël Randon, he published crime novels.
