The most important, unfinished work of Jan Kucharzewski [1876-1952]. Volumes 8-10 were not published, the manuscripts were burned in the Warsaw Uprising. Internal history of Russia with special emphasis on the history of the revolutionary movement and Russian policy towards the Polish lands. The work was popularized thanks to the abridgements of the entire work prepared by the author, which were published in English and Polish [London 1986 and domestically, among others, in independent circulation]. In the seven monumental volumes he wrote on the subject, he collected material so abundant and eloquent that even the most prejudiced Russian and Communist critics failed to refute his thesis of the uninterrupted continuity of Moscow's despotism and imperialism" [Oskar Halicki].

Excerpt:"... Custine encountered symptoms of the Russians' servility before he even set foot on their soil. In Ems he met the heir to the Russian throne with an entourage of young courtiers and adjutants. He was struck by their slavish behavior toward the grand prince; and when he moved away, these same people immediately changed their tone and manners, their behavior from docile and humble became loud, haughty and defiant. This sudden shift from servility to disinclination struck Custine unpleasantly. This was not the usual etiquette familiar at other courts, but a reflexive servility from beyond which arrogance shone through. This mixture of hubris and humility was unpleasant for a son of the old culture. Later, observing more than once in Russia courtesans insincerely cloaking themselves, he formulated his view that the Russian system is a tyranny, measured by tzarism...".

Józef Wacław Zawadzki[ 1889-1978] - bibliophile, writer, historian. Before the war he studied history at the University of Warsaw, ran a consignment antiquarian bookstore at home, and in his travels in Europe always looked around for white ravens. During the war he found himself in the Warsaw Ghetto, where he was active in cultural and social activities. He was also involved in distributing the underground press. He left the ghetto, where most of his family, including his wife, perished, after a large-scale deportation to extermination camps, in September 1942.This period of his life he did not like to recall, nor did he return to his birth name of Jozef Lewin-Laski. During the occupation he lost his entire book collection, and after the war he could be found busking in antique stores and street stalls. Until 1948, he was editor-in-chief of the Polish Socialist Party-linked "Wiedza" Publishing Cooperative, which flourished under his leadership. It was he who persuaded Wladyslaw Szpilman to write down his memoirs. In 1957 he co-organized the Society of Friends of the Book - today the Society of Polish Bibliophiles, based in Warsaw. Later he was the originator and editor of the Library of Polish and Foreign Memoirs series of the State Publishing Institute. In 1975, he signed Letter 59 - a protest against constitutional amendments. In 1976, he was among the founders of the KOR, traveled to the trials of workers in Radom, and was on the editorial committee of the Committee's communiqués.
