Jadwiga Maziarska-Pochwalska (Sosnowiec 1913 - Cracow 2003) - first studied law at Stefan Batory University in Vilnius, and from 1933 at the Alfred Terlecki Private Painting School in Cracow. She continued her studies from 1934-1939 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow. During the years of her studies, she belonged to leftist organizations, and was temporarily associated with the first Krakow Group. After the war, she belonged to the Group of Young Artists and the Artists' Club. She participated in the First Exhibition of Modern Art in Cracow 1948/49. Since 1957 she has been a member of the Cracow Group, which she co-founded. At the same time, she maintained her connection with her native Silesia, regularly exhibiting with the Zagłębie Group. From the mid-1940s, she created abstract paintings (initially also spatial forms). Consistently developing her structural interests, she reached early and independently to matter painting, of which she is a precursor not only on our ground. At first she experimented with the texture of painting, applying thick and varied layers of paint on the canvas. . From 1947 she created in the appliqué technique, sewing together pieces of fabric of different colors and textures. In the 1950s, she enriched her technique by combining oil paint with stearin, which allowed her to create compositions with thick, varied textures, shaped naturally from susceptible material. Since the 1970s, having abandoned the stearin technique, the artist returned to oil painting, creating a series of compositions with a narrow range of colors, sometimes limited to black and white. Since the 1990s, she has used richer colors again. In 2001, she received the Jan Cybis Art Prize, and the following year, as a laureate, she presented a solo exhibition at the House of the Visual Artist in Warsaw.
