Nanang Lugonto is an Indonesian artist,
born in 1972 in Sukawati, a village near the city of Ubud.
His first exhibition was held in 1995.
He proudly explains that he is self-taught because, he says, the best way to paint is to express himself "with a clear mind," meaning without templates or preconceived ideas.
His favorite subjects are Indonesian landscapes and re-enactments of the most beautiful Balinese scenes, such as dances and processions.
His painting style is characterized by a technique called "spatula painting," which creates an impressive effect of relief and contrast, an artistic stylethat isinstantly recognizable with its generously applied paint and red signature.
