Stefan Batory, Ducat 1586, Gdańsk
A municipal ducat of Stefan Batory minted at the Gdańsk Mint.
Obverse:
A bust of Stefan Batory in right-side profile, wearing a crown and armor.
On the rim, an inscription divided at the top by a crown: STEPHANVS D G REX POL D PRVS
Reverse:
Two lions support a shield bearing the coat of arms of Gdańsk
On the rim, an inscription divided at the top by the mint mark “ring” (Jan Goebel—manager of the Gdańsk mint) with crosses on either side: MONE NO AVR CIVI GEDANENSIS 86
The obverse features a double inner border: the inner one is cord-patterned, the outer one consists of beads and pearls.
Condition: NGC AU 55
Minor striking imperfections, but a beautifully struck and well-preserved piece for this type. Vivid relief. Beautiful detail. Luster and plenty of mint mirror finish. In this condition, the coin is rare and quite difficult to find on the collector’s market.
