The paintings of Zbigniew M. Dowgiałła are part of the New Expression trend initiated in the 1980s, which reached its apogee in 1986-1987. The artists, gathered in these artistic circles, were isolated from the official circulation of art at the beginning due to martial law - a time of difficult socio-political and cultural conditions. Despite this, in 1987, in the space of the former Norblin plant, on the initiative of Andrzej Bonarski, the most important exhibition was held, bringing together and presenting current trends in recent art. The presentation of "What's Up" included, in addition to Zbigniew M. Dowgiałło, such artists as Mirosław Bałka, Grzegorz Klaman, Zbigniew Libera, Włodzimierz Pawlak, Jarosław Modzelewski, Ryszard Woźniak, Ryszard Grzyb, Marek Sobczyk, Leon Tarasewicz, among others. In 1989 was published the book "What's Up. Recent Art" - an expanded exhibition catalog compiled by Maryla Sitkowska.
