Caballero de Oros (Knight of Denars) is one of the cards from the Tarot deck designed
by the famous surrealist Salvador Dali. This unique deck, originally
created for the James Bond film Live and Let Die (Live and Let Die) of
1973, was ultimately not used in it in its entirety, but was later
released as a complete deck.
Dalí, known for his love of symbolism and the occult, approached the
the creation of tarot cards in his characteristic dreamy and full of hidden meanings
way. His deck is an homage to classic Rider-Waite symbolism, but
at the same time enriched with Dalí elements, references to his own works of
art, religious and mythological motifs, and personal symbols.
The Caballero de Oros card in traditional tarot symbolizes practicality,
responsibility, loyalty, patience and the pursuit of material goals
material goals. It usually depicts a knight on horseback, carrying a coin or denarius,
often in an agricultural or stable setting. In Dali's interpretation, while it retains the
the overall sense of the card, it certainly adds depth and surrealism.
We might expect Dalí to depict the Knight of Denars in a way that
emphasizes his connection to the land, prosperity, but also perhaps with a certain obsession
of materialism, which often appeared in his art.
