Max Band, a representative of the French School of Art, was born in Lithuania in 1900, studied in Marijampolė, was sent to Berlin to study art, and later went to Paris. At a very young age, he attracted the attention of art critics and began to organise exhibitions. According to art historian Rasa Žukienė, Maksas Bandas tried to maintain contacts with Lithuania, holding two exhibitions in Kaunas in 1925 and 1932. The artist Antanas Gudaitis wrote: "The cold grey colouring tells us that Maks Bandas is a man of the north, it reminds us of the grey land of Lithuania and the same sky. These are the traces of his youth spent in Lithuania".
