Biography
The artist was born in 1922 in the village of Czarna and lived in Adamów (Lublin Province), where he worked as a carpenter and farmer. His work is associated with the Łuków center of folk sculpture, which was characterized by a wide variety of themes and rich polychromy. He did not create his first sculptures until 1965; their polychromy was handled by the artist’s wife, Adela, who, however, followed her husband’s guidelines. Chojęta sought new means of expression, diversified and enriched his compositions, and tackled a variety of themes: from genre scenes depicting village life to biblical and historical subjects. Although Chojęta did not begin his artistic career until after the age of 40, he quickly achieved great success in this field; his works were recognized in numerous competitions and exhibited in museums in Warsaw, Lublin, and Toruń. In 1976, he held a solo exhibition in Warsaw, and in 1978, he received the Oskar Kolberg Award, which is granted for outstanding contributions to and promotion of folk culture.
