Jozef Mikolaj Pochwalski - painter and printmaker; son - and initially pupil - of the well-known portraitist Kazimierz Pochwalski. He spent his childhood and youth in Vienna, where his father was a professor of painting at the Academy of Fine Arts. There he began his painting studies (1907-1912) at the school of Franz Rumpler and Rudolf Bacher. He later traveled throughout Europe, and in 1912/1913 he studied further in Munich with Karl Marr. He then stayed in Paris and Vienna. In 1910 he settled in the country; in Poznan, later in Krakow. He exhibited a lot - both at home and abroad. He painted mostly portraits, landscapes and religious paintings. He designed wall polychromes, mosaics and stained glass. He was involved in various printmaking techniques. Characterizing his work, he wrote: "I have always been a realist, and now I observe the present and the changes that have occurred, and take them into account in my works."
