In 1939, when the Germans liquidated Czechoslovakia, Hofman - a Czech by origin - took an active part in helping Czech refugees. These activities caused the Hofmans, who felt threatened after the German invasion of Poland. Thus, on September 3, they left Krakow, headed for the areas that the Red Army occupied after September 17. At that time he met an acquaintance, Colonel Ludwik Svoboda, who helped them enlist in the so-called Czech Legions. In the summer of 1940, the Hofmans left for Moscow. Their next destination was Turkey. The artist then traveled to Palestine. In early 1946, the painter traveled to Egypt and Naples to reach Prague and finally Krakow. Unfortunately, unfavorable living and working conditions forced the Hofmans to move to Zakopane and later permanently to Szklarska Poreba.
